In the poem he says, " I guess becoming colored won't make me not like the same items other folks just like who are other races Thus will my page become colored that we write? " Hughes was not asking for compassion, or intended for an apology, just understanding. He sees that even that is to be hard, considering that he fantastic professor result from two very different worlds. This individual explains that a black gentleman will always have an effect on a light man's life, and the other way round; but Barnes knows that the white man wants no part of the dark-colored man's existence. Hughes' only meager would like is to be accepted-not as a black man, but since an American.
